Posture for Gamers: What Your Child's Neck Needs After 2 Hours of Screen Time

Your child's head weighs about 4 kilograms. When they hunch over a controller or tablet, the effective load on their neck doubles or triples. They won't tell you it hurts. They'll tell you they have a headache, or that their shoulders feel "weird," or they'll say nothing at all because they don't have the vocabulary for muscular tension.

The tension is real. And it's fixable in two minutes between games.

Three exercises, explained to a 9-year-old

Pencil Squeeze

Sit on the edge of your chair. Both feet flat on the floor. Now imagine there's a pencil between your shoulder blades. Squeeze your shoulders back and try to hold the pencil for five seconds. Release. This activates the muscles that pull your shoulders back after they've been rounded forward over a screen.

Double Chin

Look straight ahead. Now push your chin back, like you're making a funny face. Hold for three seconds. Release. This strengthens the small muscles at the front of the neck that hold the head in the right position. When these muscles are strong, the big muscles at the back of the neck don't have to work so hard, and the headaches stop.

Big Shoulder Shrug

Lift both shoulders up to your ears as high as they'll go. Hold for two seconds. Now drop them. Don't lower them slowly — just let them fall. The lift-and-drop teaches the brain the difference between tense and relaxed. After ten shrugs, most kids' shoulders sit noticeably lower.

How to make it stick

Don't make it a chore. Don't say "do your exercises." Say "let's do a quick reset before the next game." Two minutes. Three exercises. Then they're back to playing. If you do it with them, it sticks twice as fast.
